e offers one of the finest silk products in Cambodia, 100% handwoven from locally grown natural silk fibers with natural non-toxic German dye. Yet the true beauty of these exquisite scarves derives from the story of how Mekong Blue came to exist.
After years of war and political upheaval, rural poverty was rampant, especially in the remote, long-forgotten Stung Treng Province. As a result, Stung Treng Women’s Development Center was launched in early 2002, with the ambitious goal of breaking the cycle of poverty and improving living standards through programs and initiatives that included vocational training and employment.
One of those initiatives was Mekong Blue. The production center now employs more than 50 women with 18 looms, seven sewing machines, and a dye center. The silk scarves, known for their durable solid weave and creative traditional and modern designs, have earned the UNESCO Seal of Excellence Award for two years in a row.
Thanks in part to Mekong Blue, it is possible for Cambodian women to own a piece of land, send young children to school, provide food and clothing for their entire family, and look forward to a brighter future.
